Former Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey Enters Denial Plea to Accusations of Misleading Lawmakers
Ex- Federal Bureau of Investigation head James Comey has denied the charges to giving untrue testimony to congressional representatives and impeding a lawmaking procedure.
Mr Comey's attorney submitted the answer on his behalf in a US district court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday morning.
Patrick Fitzgerald announced he would seek to have the case thrown out for several causes including that his defendant, a opponent of former President Trump, was being singled out.
The former director was indicted just days after Trump urged his attorney general to proceed against him.
Judicial Process
In court on mid-week, Comey's lawyer Mr Fitzgerald told the magistrate they planned to submit several motions to terminate the proceedings before a trial, arguing the prosecution was vindictive and that a government lawyer was unlawfully assigned to take over the legal matter.
Mr Comey's proceedings was first overseen by Erik Siebert, who resigned under influence from the former president after his examination into a different rival - New York Attorney General Letitia James - did not succeed to initiate prosecution.
Judicial Environment
Mr Comey appeared in optimistic frame of mind as he entered the courtroom on Wednesday, conversing with his attorneys and sharing humor. He was supported by his wife, Mrs Failor and daughter his daughter, a federal prosecutor who the former government recently fired.
Following the reading to the court recite his constitutional guarantees and the pair of allegations against him in court on Wednesday, the defendant was questioned if he grasped the allegations.
"I do your honour. Thank you," he told the judge.
Previous Events
James Comey was the head of the FBI from 2013-2017 and was fired about several months into Donald Trump's initial presidency as commander-in-chief. At the time, he was directing an probe into Russian election interference and whether there were any relationships between Russia and Trump's campaign.
During his tenure, the director caused a negative reaction from Democrats when he announced just immediately preceding the 2016 election that he was investigating presidential nominee the candidate's use of a personal email system. Legal actions against Hillary Clinton were never brought, resulting in criticism from Republicans as well.
Ongoing Accusations
The federal government allege the former director provided false information to US lawmakers during a legislative proceeding in recent years when he was being questioned about both the previous examination as well as the Russia election probe. They claim he misled the legislative body by stating he had not approved someone at the agency to leak to news outlets information about the government examinations.
Legal representatives also allege Mr Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to affect, obstruct and slow" the panel by making false statements to it.
Personal Comments
Via social media James Comey shared to his social media after he was indicted, he declared he was wrongly accused and charged Donald Trump of behaving like a "dictator".
"We have known for years that there are consequences to standing up to Donald Trump," he said. "We choose not to live on our bended knee."
"I have done nothing wrong," he added. "Therefore proceed with a court case."
The accusations against the former director emerged after the former president posted on digital channels demanding his chief prosecutor, Pam Bondi, charge Mr Comey and other people.
